V7 Migration Roadmap

Over the years, Business Driver consultants have worked with all the major versions of Vignette products. Some of the features were excellent, some rose an eyebrow, but in any case Vignette rendered itself as a company constantly looking for perfection. And with version V7 of their Content Management Suite they got really close to delivering a product that answers most of the aspirations of the content management community. On the downside, such a radical move came at the expense of limited compatibility with previous versions of Vignette. Which makes the migration to V7 a tricky task to say the least.

Many features of the V7 Content Management Suite introduce a totally new development paradigm. The new generation of its Content Management Application (CMA) is finally taking over the tedious back-end development, which will make portions of existing Vignette implementations obsolete. The content management workflow took a serious turn for the better, and now supports a sophisticated content life cycle. Content security experienced major enhancements, which also has to be incorporated into existing Vignette implementations.

The key to a successful migration to the new V7 platform is proper planning. Business Driver has developed a V7 Migration Roadmap specifically for this purpose:

• assess the existing Vignette implementation: prioritize the existing components and functionality in terms of difficulty/feasibility of migration,
• estimate the migration effort based on available resources,
• calculate the risks.
